March 25, 2009: JAWS multi-terawatt Cr:forsterite laser

JAWS is a terawatt femtosecond chromium-doped forsterite (Cr4+:Mg2SiO4) laser system, based on an oscillator, regenerative amplifier and four stages of multi-pass amplifiers. The system can generate 80 fs pulses at 1240 nm wavelength, with pulse energies of 85 mJ giving a peak power range of 1-2 TW at 10 Hz and is assembled on a single 1.2?.0 m optical table. Cr:forsterite is directly pumped at 1064 nm removing the need for more expensive green pump lasers. Fundamental, 2nd and 3rd harmonics of Cr:F laser are convenient for a number of applications in time-resolved spectroscopy, telecommunications, photochemistry, photobiology, plasma physics, VUV, x-ray generation, and material processing. Wavelength range is also well outside the visible and shows significantly less pulse broadening in atmosphere than 800 nm.

March 25, 2009: Pismo Pulse Picker

The Pismo pulse picker system comprises of a control and power supply unit (CPSU) and a Pockels cell with a HV driver.

The CPSU realizes the following functions: synchronization to a pulse train, amplifier pump laser start (flash-lamp or diode pumped with acoustooptical or electrooptical Q-switch) synchronously to the picked pulses, oscilloscope synchronization, streak-camera synchronization and other
equipment that requires synching to a pulse train. The CPSU has 5 independent delay channels that are rigidly fixed to a fs pulse train (jitter <200 ps). One CPSU can manage up to 4 Pockels cells. The Pockels cell consists of a HV pulse driver and an EO crystal. The HV driver produces a bell-shaped HV pulse with duration of <10 ns at level 10 % from maximum (rise/fall time <4 ns). This pulse is then supplied to the DKDP electrooptical crystal. Typical Specifications

February 19, 2009: Ti:Sapphire lasers for THz applications
Del Mar Photonics Ti:Sapphire laser helps Physical Optics Corporation in Phase I and Phase II Army awards.

To address the U.S. Army need for new techniques for detecting concealed explosives, Physical Optics Corporation (POC) proposes a new 100 m standoff Terahertz Spectroscopic Radar (TSR) which uses terahertz (THz) molecular spectroscopy to detect the unique THz absorption wavelength signature of an explosive's outgassed material. This design exhibits the most decisive identification pattern of explosives, whose molecular vibration modes lie in the THz region. To detect these specific explosive identifiers, TSR's innovative
design analyzes the retroreflected THz signals from targets rather than the transmitted THz signals common to the conventional spectroscopy performed inside a laboratory. The TSR design combines a wideband (1-20 THz) transmitter and a
receiver spectrometer, built on a mobile station. Using a high-quality submillimeter wave radar to send high rep-rate (~100 MHz) THz probing pulses, POC system can identify not only the explosive but also the location of the target with spatial resolution better than 0.03 mm since our radar pulsewidth is faster than 100 femtosecond (fs). The average power of our source is exceptionally high (~100 W) compared with any other THz sources. In Phase I POC buill a preliminary TSR prototype, while Phase II will focus on a full engineering prototype.

Latest results on using femtosecond lasers for THZ generation will be presented by POC at SPIE DSS 2009.

November 17, 2008: Femtosecond ready NSOM-AFM-STM

Conventional microscopes have fundamentally limited resolution due to diffraction, but there is no such restriction for near-field interactions, that is why near-field microscopy is becoming important nano-science technique.
Possible applications of this tool are characterization of photonic nanodevices, bio photonics (investigation of cells, viruses, DNA molecules), nano-chemistry (chemical reactions control), nanoscale photolithography (processing of photosensitive polymers). NSOM delivered femto-second pulses can be used for nanometer-scale surface topology modification. Temporal resolution provided by femtosecond laser opens wide range of new possibilities such as: transport dynamics studies of nanostructured materials, pump-probe experiments, ultra fast coherent and Raman spectroscopy. Spatial optical resolution is better than 100 nm and temporal resolution in the pulse operation mode is better than 100 fs. Tunable CW operation for spectral measurements is also available.  Request a quote

May 30, 2008: Hatteras

Femtosecond Transient Absorption system Hatteras.

Future nanostructures and biological nanosystems will take advantage not only of the small dimensions but also of the specific way of interaction between nano-objects. The interactions of building blocks within these nanosystems will be studied and optimized on the femtosecond time scale - says Sergey Egorov, President and CEO of Del Mar Photonics, Inc. Whether you want to create a new photovoltaic system that will efficiently convert photon energy in charge separation, or build a molecular complex that will dump photon energy into local heat to kill cancer cells, or create a new fluorescent probe for FRET microscopy, understanding of internal dynamics on femtosecond time scale is utterly important and requires new measurement techniques such as our Femtosecond Transient Absorption system Hatteras.

February 13, 2008: High Resolution Laser Spectrometer
