Abstract
Centimeter-size KBBF and RBBF single crystals have been grown hydrothermally for NLO applications. Second harmonic generation of 800 nm fundamental light has been demonstrated using both KBBF and RBBF in preliminary studies.

Abstract
Fourth harmonic generation of a tunable Ti:sapphire laser with a repetition rate of 80 MHz and pulse duration ∼150 fs has been realized in a single pass with an RbBe2BO3F2 crystal for the first time. A high average power was obtained which was tunable throughout a wide range from 180 to 232.5 nm. The output power over the whole range exceeded 2 mW, the highest being 43.3 mW at 202.5 nm. Moreover, deep-ultraviolet output with powers above 75 mW was obtained at 193.5 and 200 nm under a stronger focusing condition. This is the first attempt at the generation of tunable deep-ultraviolet light without using a KBBF crystal, which is very difficult to grow due to its strong layering tendency, and our attempt may provide new opportunities for the development of all-solid-state deep-ultraviolet coherent light sources.

Trigonal structures of ABe2BO3F2 (A = Rb, Cs, Tl) crystals
C. D. McMillen, J. Hu, D. VanDerveer and J. W. Kolis
Abstract: Several interesting fluoroberyllium borates were synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of RbBe2BO3F2 (RBBF; rubidium fluoroberyllium borate) and CsBe2BO3F2 (CBBF; caesium fluoroberyllium borate), previously determined in the space group C2, were reinvestigated for higher symmetry and found to have more suitable solutions in the space group R32. TlBe2BO3F2 (TBBF; thallium fluoroberyllium borate) was synthesized as a novel compound also having this trigonal structure type. Details of the space-group determination and unique structural features are discussed. These crystal structures were compared with that of KBe2BO3F2, revealing interesting structural trends within this family of compounds that are also discussed. A crystallographic explanation of the physical morphology is postulated.

Keywords: hydrothermal synthesis; space-group determination; physical morphology; optical materials.

Recent Advances in New Deep-UV Nonlinear Optical Crystal KBe_2BO_3F_2 Family

LIU Lijuan, CHEN Chuangtian(Key Laboratory of Functional Crystals and Laser, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190,China)
Deep-UV nonlinear optical crystal KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF)has been developed for nearly twenty years. In this paper, firstly, the history of the discovery of the nonlinear optical crystal棗KBe2BO3F2 with a description of its growth and basic optical properties was briefly reviewed. Secondly, for the KBBF family, including RBBF and CBBF, their crystal growth and basic optical properties were also introduced. Then their abilities to produce deep-UV laser for these crystals were evaluated. Finally some applications using the novel deep-UV laser produced by KBBF crystal device were introduced.
